When it comes to planning for your Jewish wedding, you want to make sure that everything is in order and properly organised and completed to make your wedding go without a hitch. From the marriage contract to the wedding canopy, the food, the guests, and the dress, there is absolutely everything to think about and not one single detail should be over-looked. Jewish weddings are often known as beautiful and lively events so you will want to start thinking about the Jewish rituals and the wedding entertainment. Here are a few tips to help you create your perfect Jewish wedding.
First of all, you will need to decide on where to have the wedding ceremony. Many weddings involve choosing two places- one for the marriage and one for the party, but the typical Jewish wedding conducts both in the same place with a chuppa (cloth canopy)in the room where the marriage takes place (usually only the bride, the groom and the rabbi is present in the canopy). This is really handy as there’s no need to pay for two venues, but do make sure the room is big enough for all the guests plus the canopy to fit in comfortably.
Once you have the venue sorted out, you can then choose to plan for your wedding dress! There are no general rules when it comes to Jewish wedding dresses except for the veil- it is essential the bride has a veil for the traditional Bedecken ceremony- the veiling of the bride. This is usually a pre-wedding custom where the groom has to cover his bride’s face with her veil to legally confirm that she is the one he will marry. Jewish wedding dresses tend to be white, but you can choose which colour suits you best, maybe ivory, as again there is no set rule. Once the dress is sorted, people tend to start thinking about what colour flowers they would like to tone in with the bridesmaids’ dresses and any accessories the bride will be wearing, e.g., hair clips, nail polish, waist sash, or bag.
Next you may want to start to think about what music and entertainment you would like. Every Jewish wedding has dancing so that the guests can perform the Chair Dance. You may consider having a DJ to perform regular pop songs if you are planning a more modern wedding, or if you are being as traditional as you can, there are professional Jewish bands and orchestras you could hire. They will know what traditional wedding songs to play and will be able to work with each couple to give them the perfect music mix. You will also want to consider what wedding decorations you would like- flowers and candles are quite popular, as are brightly coloured balloons and ‘Mazol Tav’ banners and confetti, as well as ribbons draped around the canopy and the tables. With these basic tips in mind you can be assured that you are planning for an amazing Jewish wedding that no-one will forget!
